The Freedom Formula — How to Calculate Your Exact Exit Date From the 9-to-5

Most people who want financial freedom make the same mistake: they pick a number.

Usually it's a big one. A million euros. Two million. Some figure with enough zeros to feel safely out of reach — which is exactly why they never actually pursue it. The goal is so abstract, so distant, so dependent on luck or timing, that the only rational response is to stop thinking about it and go back to work.

Here's what I discovered when I moved to Portugal: freedom isn't a number. It's a ratio.

The Freedom Formula

The only equation that matters is this:

Passive Income > Survival Number = Freedom

That's it. That's the entire formula.

Your Survival Number is the absolute minimum you need to live — housing, food, utilities, basic obligations. Not your current lifestyle. Not your aspirational lifestyle. What you actually need to survive.

Your Passive Income is what your assets generate without your labour. Dividends, rent, business income, royalties, anything that arrives whether you show up or not.

The moment passive income exceeds your survival number, you are free. Not rich. Not retired necessarily. But free. Work becomes optional. Every day after that is a choice, not an obligation.

Why most people never calculate this

Most people have a vague, terrifying sense that freedom requires millions. But they've never actually done the math.

When I moved to Portugal, my Survival Number dropped by 85%. What cost me $10,000/month in Manhattan cost $1,500/month in Lisbon. My investments didn't need to work harder. I just changed the denominator.

That's the move most people miss. They spend their entire lives trying to increase the top number — earn more, invest more, grow more. But the fastest path to the Freedom Ratio isn't always earning more. Sometimes it's needing less.

The three milestones of freedom

Don't look at the Freedom Ratio as one giant leap. Think of it as three milestones:

Level 1 — Stability: Your passive income covers your smallest recurring bills. Your phone. Your internet. Your utilities. It sounds small, but this is the first moment in your life you are "free" from those specific obligations. The machine has started.

Level 2 — Security: Your machine pays for groceries and housing. At this level, you could lose your job tomorrow and your family would still have a roof and a meal. This is where courage in the market begins to skyrocket.

Level 3 — Liberty: Your machine covers your Survival Number plus your lifestyle. Work is now 100% optional.

Calculate your exit date today

Here's how to start:

Step 1: Calculate your Survival Number. Strip everything down to the essentials. What do you actually need to live?

Step 2: List every source of passive income you currently have. Savings interest, any rental income, dividends, anything.

Step 3: Subtract. The gap between your current passive income and your Survival Number is your Freedom Gap — the distance between where you are and where you need to be.

Step 4: Target the first bill. Don't aim for the whole number yet. Aim for your machine to pay your phone bill. Then your utilities. Then your groceries. Small wins compound into full freedom.

The machine is ready. It just needs you to start it.
